Portrait of Sir John Norris

This portrait of Sir John Norris is taken from George Crabb's 1825 Universal Historical Dictionary. Born, c.1547, Norris was the second of the six soldier sons of Henry, 1st Baron Norris of Rycote, and his wife Margery (van Meteren, Discovrse Historicall, p. 154). One of Elizabeth I's leading military commanders, his contemporary fame, largely earned through his campaigns in support of the Dutch Revolt, outshone that of his brothers.
