The 5th Earl of Abingdon inherited a financial mess upon his succession to the title and Rycote in 1799. In an effort to raise money to pay family debts he ordered the demolition of Rycote House in 1807. Over the course of three days in June the mansion was auctioned off in lots brick by brick. The only part of the mansion to survive, presumably because it failed to attract a buyer, was part of the south-west tower. The sale raised a total of £1981 6s 4d.
