Catalogue of the library at Rycote House of Willoughby Bertie, 4th Earl of Abingdon

Author
Date
1801
Medium
Manuscript

This catalogue of the library at Rycote Park was drawn up in 1801 and describes the library of the late 4th Earl of Abingdon. The catalogue lists over one thousand printed books. Four hundred and thirty of the books were published prior to 1700. It is impossible to tell whether any of the pre-1700 titles were acquired by Rycote's Tudor and Stuart owners. With much of the house destroyed by a fire in 1745, it is plausible that the collection described here was formed after the renovation works. It seems probable, given the financial straits of the Bertie family, that the catalogue was drawn up with the intention of preparing the collection for sale. In some cases the value, or perhaps the sale price that was achieved, has been recorded. In addition to the books, the catalogue lists six manuscripts but provides no information regarding their date or provenance. It is not clear if the books listed on folios 101-103 were at Rycote. The volume containing the Rycote listing commences with a catalogue of books at Wytham Abbey. Folios 101-103 have been inserted at the rear of the volume, after the Rycote catalogue, with no indication as to which house they refer to.
