A Generall Mapp of the County of Oxford, with its Hundreds by Ric. Blome

Author
Richard Blome
Date
1673
Medium
Map

This map bears an uncanny resemblance to Speed’s map, published almost seventy years earlier, similarly depicting county and hundred boundaries, rivers, towns and villages, parks surrounded by palings, woodland, and relief. However, of particular interest is this map’s dedication, visible in the crudely engraved cartouche at the bottom centre, which states: “To ye Rt Honbl Iames Lord Norreys Baron of Rycott etc. This Mapp is Humbly Dedicated by Richard Blome”. Blome was a London-based map and bookseller, and also a Freeman of the Company of Stationers, his principal work being Britannia, an atlas of county maps very much in the Speed mould. Scale: c1:210,000.
