Letter informing Lord Norris that he is to be recommended to Charles II for an earldom

In this letter, Sir Thomas Clarges informs James Bertie, Lord Norris of a proposal to advance him to an earldom. He writes that the Earl of Halifax and the Duke of Albemarle are to recommend to the King that in the bestowing of an earldom on Norris he "would doe himself right, and encourage persons of vertue and birth to be earnest in his Majesties concerns." Norris was created Earl of Abingdon on 23 November 1682 (CSP Dom. 1682, p. 550).
