Letter from Dom Antonio to Sir John Norris discussing cavalry requirements

Author
Dom Antonio
Date
30 November [1588]
Medium
Manuscript

This letter, written in Italian, from Dom Antonio to Sir John Norris, discussing cavalry requirements, probably dates from November 1588 and relates to the plans being drawn up for Norris and Sir Francis Drake's 1589 expedition to Portugal. One of the aims of the expedition was to end Spanish rule of Portugal by placing the pretender Dom Antonio on the throne (Hammer, Elizabeth's Wars, p. 155). Norris and Drake's move to take Lisbon in May 1589 ended in complete failure. Dom Antonio's promises of popular Portuguese support also proved empty (Wingfield, Trve Coppie, pp. 34-5).
