The Earl of Abingdon died of a fever on 22 May 1699 (Cokayne, Peerage, vol. 1, p. 46). In this letter, Arthur Charlett describes Abingdon's funeral at Rycote on 29 May: "the Funeral last Tuesday night at Ricot was very splendid [and] Regular, and the Company numerous, tho none invited, nor did any from Oxford City or University, but had the least Intimation been given, that an Appearance would have been but tolerably admitted, I veryly beleive all Persons of all Ranks Conditions and Ages that could ride or go in this County, would have attended." The Earl was buried in the Rycote Chapel vault. He is commemorated by a monument in the Chapel.
