Portrait of Henry VIII

Sampson Strong?

This posthumous portrait of Henry VIII was possibly painted by Sampson Strong (Garlick, Bodleian Portraits, p. 172). Henry visited Rycote on a summer progress with his new bride, and fifth wife, Katherine Howard in August 1540. Based upon the recorded movements of the King's Privy Council, it would appear that Henry and Katherine arrived at Rycote from Ewelme on the afternoon of 26 August and departed the following day for Notley Abbey (LP Henry VIII, vol. 15, p. 498-9).
