This portrait of James, which was possibly produced by the studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, was given to the University of Oxford by Lord Crew in 1720 (Garlick, Bodleian Portraits, p. 190). James, then Duke of York and heir to his brother Charles II, was entertained at Rycote on 22 May 1683 following a visit to Oxford and the University (MS. Wood D. 19(3), fols. 53-8).
