Portrait of Mary of Modena

This portrait, which may have been produced from the studio of Sir Peter Lely, was given to the University of Oxford by Lord Crew in 1720 (Garlick, Bodleian Portraits, p. 220). Mary was entertained at Rycote on 22 May 1683, along with her husband James, Duke of York (the future King James II of England and VII of Scotland), and her step-daughter Anne (the future Queen Anne), following a visit to Oxford and the University (MS. Wood D. 19(3), fols. 53-8).
